Cultural Intelligence (CQ)

What is CQ?

Cultural Intelligence (CQⓇ) is one’s “capability to function effectively in intercultural contexts, including different national, ethnic, organizational, generational, and many other contexts” (Livermore, 2015, pp. ix–x). CQ is based on extensive and rigorous academic research and used across multiple industries to promote excellent leadership practice. CQ can be utilized and developed by anyone who wishes to become more skillful in successfully working across cultural differences.

For senior and executive leaders, developing CQ translates directly into enhanced strategic decision-making and improved organizational performance, whether navigating global markets or complex domestic landscapes. Leaders with high CQ are better equipped to navigate the complexities of diverse stakeholder groups, foster innovation by surfacing and honoring varied perspectives, and build stronger relationships within and across organizational boundaries.

Research indicates that leaders with higher CQ demonstrate increased effectiveness in cross-cultural negotiations, leading to more successful partnerships and business outcomes. Importantly, CQ is equally valuable in addressing the nuanced cultural dynamics within domestic organizations, where regional, generational, and professional subcultures can significantly impact collaboration and effectiveness. Furthermore, CQ empowers leaders to create environments where individuals feel valued and understood, driving higher levels of engagement and commitment. This aligns directly with Brave Space Leadership's dedication to fostering environments where individuals can thrive and contribute their best, building strong, collaborative, and successful organizations.

CQ Assessments, Coaching, and Training

As a CQ Certified Facilitator, Dr. Brian Arao administers CQ Assessments and provides coaching and training on their results for individuals and teams who want to increase their capacity to lead effectively in culturally diverse settings..

  • The CQ 360° Assessment provides you with individually-tailored insights into your strengths and areas for growth within the CQ model, based both on your own ratings and anonymous ratings from others

  • The CQ Pro Assessment is similar to the 360 option, but the results are based only on self ratings.

In addition to an individual insights report, both the CQ 360 and CQ Pro offer an optional group-level report which aggregates data to provide insights about a team's CQ.
