Chrysalis

A QTBIPOC Career Transformation Experience

Emerging January 2025

What is Chrysalis?

chrys●a●lis: a protective space for growth and transformation.

Chrysalis is a collaborative project by Brave Space Leadership and Trans*Formational Change for queer and trans BIPOC who find themselves at a professional crossroads. These kinds of crossroads can take many forms, such as:

  • You are navigating difficult dynamics in your workplace and don’t know how you want to address them

  • You enjoy your current role yet feel that your professional growth has stalled

  • You are considering a change in job or even profession, and need more clarity about what options would work for you or what strategies might help you get there

Whatever kind of crossroads you’re facing, Chrysalis can help you make powerful decisions about how to proceed within a supportive learning and professional community of no more than eight QTBIPOC professionals.

Chrysalis is designed to address the specific needs of QTBIPOC working in higher education; future offerings of Chrysalis may expand to include more industries.

We were inspired to create Chrysalis because of the ways we struggled to navigate our own career crossroads as higher education professionals. As QTBIPOC, these challenges were compounded by our often traumatic experiences of racism, heterosexism, and/or cissexism. These systems of oppression not only imposed external barriers to our career progression; they also amplified our feelings of self-doubt and constrained our imagination about what career options might be both fulfilling and available to us. We are grateful to the peers, mentors, and coaches who reminded us we are part of a long lineage of QTBIPOC communities with proud traditions of using creativity, innovation, resilience, and brilliance to thrive under adverse conditions. Now, we want to help other QTBIPOC access and use these same gifts to envision and successfully pursue the next phases of their careers in ways that align to their values and bring them deep satisfaction and joy.

How much does Chrysalis cost?

We are inspired by the Anti-Oppression Resources and Training Alliance (AORTA) and their values-aligned approach to pricing training programs. We have adapted AORTA’s sliding scale and self-assessment for Chrysalis. We invite you to reflect on the self-assessment provided below to discern what rate is most appropriate for you.

    • Are you and your family (of origin and/or of choosing) homeowners or landowners?

    • Have you attended private education institutions or do you have an advanced degree?

    • Are your bills or credit cards on autopay?

    • Have you not had difficulty accessing and affording healthcare or health insurance for you or your family members?

    • Do you have zero to no debt and/or do you have disposable income?

    • Do you have a safety net composed of “financially stable” or wealthy family (of origin and/or of choosing) and friends?

    • Do you have U.S. Citizenship?

    • Does your income only support you, and not others?

    • Have you or do you expect to inherit money or property

    • Have you (or could you have) attended college?

    • Have you (or could you have) attended graduate school?

    • Consider the Solidarity rate of $1,375.00 if your organization cannot or will not cover any of the cost of your participation in Chrysalis and you answered more “no” than “yes” to the questions in the reflection on personal financial capacity.

    • Consider the Sustain rate of $2,075.00 if your organization will cover part of the cost of your participation in Chrysalis and you answered more “no” than “yes” to the questions in the reflection on personal financial capacity.

    • Consider the Full Price rate of $2,750.00 if:

      • Your organization will cover the full cost of your participation in Chrysalis, or

      • Your organization will cover part of the cost of your participation in Chrysalis and you answered more “yes” than “no” to the questions in the reflection on personal financial capacity.

    • Consider the Redistribution rate of $3,425.00 if your organization will cover the full cost of your participation in Chrysalis and regularly covers the cost for you to engage annually in one or more professional development experiences (e.g., conference, workshop, course, coaching program, etc.)
